Creed II proved to be a heavyweight champion, helping to propel the box office to the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in history.
Total ticket sales for the Wednesday to Sunday holiday movie-going period added up to an estimated $314 million. That marked the first time the Thanksgiving box office has passed $300 million, according to Comscore. The previous record of $294 million was set in 2013, when The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was in theaters.
This weekend, Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet topped the box office after collecting $55.6 million over the three-day weekend, and a stunning $84.4 million since its debut on Wednesday.
Creed II also landed a knockout punch. It brought in $35.3 million over three days and an impressive $55.8 million since Wednesday, for a second place finish.
The sequel to Creed, starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, landed the best opening ever in the Rocky cinematic universe.
“The first Creed film was a revelation to many who figured the Rocky saga had run its course,” Comscore Sr. Media Analyst Paul? Dergarabedian told Urban Hollywood 411. “That film presented a fresh take on the Rocky mythology and set the stage for the crowd and critic-pleasing Creed II.”
