Shortly before he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Houston last week, rapper BTB Savage received threats from someone saying they were going to “make his momma cry.”
The rapper’s grief-stricken mother discussed the circumstances leading up to his death in an April 3 interview with Houston TV station ABC13.
BTB Savage, whose birth name was Darrell Gentry, was gunned down on Thursday, March 30.
The shooting happened just hours after he posted photos on Instagram and Twitter of the blood-splattered scene where he said he and his girlfriend killed a would-be robber in self-defense.

The rapper’s mother, Bernita Ward, said she told her son to remove the pictures, but her pleas were ignored.
“I said, ‘Take that off social media,'” Ward recalled. “Let this family mourn in peace. They were taunting my son, though, telling him they were going to kill the family, make his momma cry, and kill his son. I told my son, ‘Don’t respond.'”
In a March 26 interview with DJ Vlad, BTB Savage said he and his girlfriend killed a man who was trying to rob him.
The rapper said he had a meeting with two men to discuss working on a song together. According to BTB, one of the men claimed to have forgotten something and went outside. The other man asked about a chain BTB was wearing and a dispute broke out.
“I see you flexin’ on Instagram,” he recalled the man saying, referring to photos like the one above that BTB posted on Instagram of himself holding stacks of cash and wearing flashy jewelry.
The 26-year-old rapper said the man pulled out “two guns.” The would-be robber fired at him, and BTB’s arm was injured. BTB yelled for his girlfriend to shoot the man. The rapper told DJ Vlad the would-be robber was begging for help, but he told the suspect: “I don’t give a (expletive) about you. You’re going to die.”
BTB said he yelled for his girlfriend to shoot the man. “She popped him in the back twice,” he stated in the now-viral interview.
The rapper’s mother offered additional details on the attempted robbery, saying it happened at her son’s apartment in San Antonio in February. She said she’s sure he was killed in retaliation for the February incident.
“The moral of this story is two mothers lost two amazing sons and that their children would be raised without fathers,” Ward said. “That’s the sad thing.”
She added that BTB previously served in the military, and leaves behind a 4-year-old son.
Urban Hollywood 411 spoke with the Houston Police Department on Monday. A police spokesperson said investigators are still searching for the suspects who ambushed the rapper as he drove through the 2100 block of Mid Lane on the evening of March 30. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Police said a black Subaru SUV with two suspects inside drove up, opened fire, then fled “at a high rate of speed.” The FBI is assisting Houston police in the investigation.
