Bobby Brown is no fan of the Britney Spears version of his 1988 signature song, “My Prerogative.” The cover was released in 2004 as part of her greatest hits collection.

“I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples,” Brown said Wednesday to host Shannon Sharpe on the Club Shay Shay podcast. “Like Britney Spears butchered, she butchered ‘Prerogative.’ Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that, you know, I … I couldn’t take it.”

Brown admitted he approved the use of the song.

“I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears, and I was thinking…” Brown began, then was cut off by Sharpe, who added,“She going to do it good. She going to do it right.”

“Yeah,” Brown responded. “Teddy Riley’s doing it too. So, you know, but I felt it was a butchering.”

That bad experience has made Brown more cautious about the use of his music.  He now asks to hear a track before he allows its use.

“Because you don’t know what these kids will say these days. You know, these kids will say some s— that, you know, you don’t want your song associated with.”

“My Prerogative” was written as a response to Brown’s departure from  New Edition. It was produced by Teddy Riley and became a No. 1 hit.

But the Spears version was an even bigger hit internationally, released as part of her  album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. Spears was near the height of her fame in 2004, having just married Kevin Federline a month before the album hit.
