Stone, 63, was killed in a car accident in the early morning hours on Saturday, March 1.

The Grammy-nominated artist and members of her band were traveling after performing the night before in Mobile, Alabama, when their van collided with an 18-wheeler truck, Stone’s publicist said.

The group’s 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter flipped over on Interstate 65 around 4:25 a.m. and was struck by a Freightliner Cascadia truck driven by a 33-year-old man, the Alabama Highway Patrol told the Associated Press.

Stone was declared deceased at the scene. Eight others in the van suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Angie Stone, an award-winning singer and songwriter, was known to fans as one of neo-soul’s leading ladies. She released a string of hits, including “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” “Brotha” and “Everyday” (one of several songs she wrote with her former partner D’Angelo).

The South Carolina native broke into the music business as a teenager in the 1970s when she formed hip-hop trio The Sequence with high school friends Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisolm.

The group scored a hit with their single “Funk You Up,” which has been sampled by some of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B.

Over her career, Stone received three Grammy nominations. She won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. And in 2021, received the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors.

She also had roles in several movies and TV shows, and sang the theme song for the television series Girlfriends.

Stone is survived by her two children Diamond Stone and Michael Archer, as well as grandchildren and extended family members.
