A Different World got off to a rocky start back in 1987, according to Jasmine Guy.
The actress, who played Whitley Gilbert on the NBC comedy, sat down with other members of the show’s cast for the Dec. 19 episode of Red Table Talk.
“I gave my two week notice during the first season,” Guy revealed. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to be in this anymore.'”

When show executives asked her what was wrong, she told them the cast was being “disrespected.”
“‘I feel like Lisa Bonet is disrespected in front of the audience,” Guy recalled saying. “‘You are disrespecting the cast.'”
The actress admits she hadn’t read the fine print on her multi-year contract, and didn’t realize she was obligated to remain on the series.
Bonet departed after the first season, and Debbie Allen was brought in to change the creative direction of the series about life at a fictional HBCU.
