Angela Bassett looks back on her journey to success and the women she’s portrayed, in a new OWN “Spotlight” interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In January, Bassett received an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In a clip from her interview with Winfrey, the actress says she’s “humbled” by the award.

Bassett notes that the honor came after years of putting in work.

“I worked hard to get to this place, so I know it’s not a gift,” Bassett says. “I know that I earned it because I worked hard for it.”

She talks about the impact of the characters she’s played, and on a more personal level, discusses her roles as a wife to actor Courtney B. Vance and as a mom.

The actress got her start on the daytime soap operas Ryan’s Hope and The Search for Tomorrow.

Her other television work includes performances in The Rosa Parks Story, Master of None, The Flood, The Imagineering Story, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Good Night Oppy, the American Horror Story anthology series, and rescue drama 9-1-1.

Among her film credits are roles in Boyz N the Hood, Malcolm X, Waiting to Exhale, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

In another clip, Bassett tells Winfrey she’s proud of the message How Stella Got Her Groove Back — which was based on a best-selling novel by Terry McMillan — sent about women over 40.

“For seasoned women to be sure of yourself, of who you are, of your standards, feeling free in you own beauty, and intellect and sensuality, it meant a great deal,” she shares.

Over her four-decade career she has received two Oscar nominations — the first for her role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It and the second for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The one-hour special on Bassett premieres March 2, 2024, on the OWN network. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
