Police are investigating a fatal shooting at a mansion party in the Beverly Crest section of Los Angeles, the LAPD said Tuesday.
Officers responded to multiple noise complaints in the 13000 block of Mulholland Drive. Hours later, gunfire erupted at the location just before 1 a.m. Multiple people were injured.
A spokesman in the LAPD’s Media Relations Division told Urban Hollywood 411 three of the victims were women and one later died.
The Los Angeles Fire Department issued a statement saying paramedics transported three victims to area hospitals. “Two patients are in critical condition and one patient is in grave condition,” the fire department said.
The woman in grave condition was pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to police. She was 35 years old, the LAPD spokesman said. Police said a total of five people were injured, including the woman who later died.
Two partygoers who returned to the scene Tuesday afternoon told us the gunfire came from outside the house as the gathering started to wind down. The two women, who did not want to give their names, said they decided to attend the gathering after learning about it on Instagram.
“Everybody knew about it,” one of the women said. She added that there were about 300 people inside the party and everyone was having a good time, until someone opened fire.
Multiple rounds of gunfire could be heard in videos posted to social media from the party. The footage showed a food truck at the location and multiple high-end vehicles, including a Rolls Royce.
Few party attendees were wearing masks and there did not appear to be any social distancing despite COVID-19 restrictions in Los Angeles County, which banned “indoor and outdoor, public and private events where 50 or more were gathered.”
The massive gathering started Monday evening at the multi-million-dollar home. An LAPD officer at the scene overnight told local television station ABC7 that there was nothing officers could do before the shooting because partygoers were not breaking any laws, and police are not enforcing coronavirus health code violations in private homes.
“We did come out here for the public disturbance calls. It was a private party, it was indoors. The main thing is…how do you enforce the fact that it’s a private party,” said Lt. Chris Ramirez.
The mansion was being used as a vacation rental, Ramirez added. It was unclear who rented the home. The shooting is being investigated as gang-related, the LAPD said.
