The 2026 summer box office isn’t just hot, it’s about to make history.

Thanks to blockbuster films including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and Michael, domestic ticket sales have reached $4.24 billion since the summer frame began on May 1, box office tracking company Rentrak reported Sunday.

That total marks a 5.7% increase over the pre-pandemic summer of 2019, when the box office tally was $4.01 billion at the same point in the season.

According to Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, the box office is nearing the all-time summer record.

“This has been a remarkable summer movie season,” Dergarabedian told Urban Hollywood 411 on Sunday afternoon. “We’re now only about $514 million shy of the biggest domestic summer ever—the record $4.75 billion summer of 2013, which was led by Iron Man 3.”

Year to date, the 2026 box office climbed to a projected $6.86 billion this weekend.

Dergarabedian noted there’s been a wide range of films drawing crowds to theaters since January.

“We’ve had massive must-see theatrical events like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, but we’ve also seen family films, specialty and indie titles, event cinema and international releases all finding their audiences,” he explained.

Quality Makes a Difference
The quality of those films contributed to their success, according to Ronda Racha Penrice, who is a pop culture critic, author, and member of the African American Film Critics Association.

“[Hollywood] is making better films and these films are talking about real issues,” Penrice told us.

As an example, the longtime film critic pointed to the storyline and emotion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which as of Sunday has earned $785.8 million domestically and $2.02 billion worldwide.

“It isn’t just the mindless superhero saga. It also talked about the toll of being a superhero,” she said.

Penrice also singled out the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which opened April 24, just before the official start of the summer movie season.

“What I liked about Michael was it showed how Michael Jackson had a direct hand in his own success. It highlighted his musical genius,” Penrice stated.

She predicted movie fans will be talking about this year’s summer releases for years to come.

“These are movies that are going to resonate 30 years from now,” she said.

Summer of Hits
Other success stories this summer include the supernatural horror film Obsession, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and the psychological thriller Backrooms directed by 21-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons.

In June, Variety reported Backrooms was indie distributor A24’s “highest-grossing worldwide release, as well as the studio’s first movie to surpass $200 million in ticket sales.”

There’s even more good news for theater owners. We still have three weeks left before the summer movie season officially ends on Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 7.

“This is momentum that I think we’re going to see continue, with some really interesting movies on the way, including Coyote vs. Acme and The Dog Stars on August 28,” said Dergarabedian.
