Loretta Devine and Malynda Hale take center stage in the Southern family drama Bull Street, which is out now on digital platforms.
Written and directed by newcomer Lynn Dow, the character-driven independent film explores legacy, racism and generational conflict in a small South Carolina town.
The story follows LouEster Gibbs (Hale), a small-town attorney who finds herself fighting to protect her family’s longtime home after an Ivy League lawyer challenges their claim to the property. The dispute leads to a courtroom battle with legacy facing off against privilege.
Devine, an Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee, plays LouEster’s grandmother, affectionately known as Mrs. Big-Gal.
LouEster wants to hold on to the property, but the family doesn’t have a deed. Still, Mrs. Big-Gal says in the trailer she has no intention of giving up the land.
“Your daddy left me all the living rights I need,” she tells her granddaughter. Unfortunately, Mrs. Big-Gal soon learns she needs more than verbal agreements to sway a court.
Oscar and Golden Globe winner Amy Madigan (Weapons) plays a judge who has known Mrs. Big-Gal for decades. But when the family seeks her help, the judge insists saving the property is “out of my power.”
Bull Street comes from Los Angeles-based Buffalo 8 productions. The film was released July 17 and is available to purchase on Amazon and other digital movie platforms.
