It’s the highest-grossing biopic of all time after crossing the billion-dollar mark at the box office. Now, Michael is ready to thrill television audiences.
Starz announced this week the Michael Jackson biopic will make its streaming debut on Aug. 10. The film will be available on the Starz app and the network’s streaming and on-demand platforms.
The blockbuster also make its television premiere that same evening at 7 p.m. ET/PT on the Starz channel.
Released in theaters on April 24, Michael has earned $1.001 billion worldwide, making it the first biopic to join the billion-dollar club.
“It was indeed beyond anyone’s wildest expectations back in late April when the film was released in theaters that Michael would have a shot at hitting a billion dollars at the worldwide box office,” Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, previously told Urban Hollywood 411.
The Lionsgate film surpassed the $911 million earned by Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018 to become the highest-grossing musical biopic. It also overtook Oppenheimer, which earned $975 million worldwide in 2023, and was the biggest movie ever based on a real person.
Directed by Training Day filmmaker Antoine Fuqua and produced by Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King, Michael features the late King of Pop’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the title role.
The story begins in the 1960s and traces Jackson’s journey from a child performer in Gary, Indiana, with the Jackson 5 to becoming the biggest entertainer in the world.
The cast also includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Jackson’s parents, alongside Miles Teller, Kendrick Sampson, Larenz Tate, and Laura Harrier. Juliano Valdi portrays Jackson as a child.
Also coming to Starz in August, Australian sports drama Beast starring Russell Crowe. The film follows a down-and-out MMA fighter who gets pulled back into the cage for one final fight and reunites with his old coach, played by Crowe. The drama was released in April and makes its streaming debut on Starz Aug. 8.
On the series front, crime drama Power Book III: Raising Kanan reaches its explosive series finale on Aug. 7. And new episodes of crime drama Fightland will continue to debut every Friday in August.
