Lee Cronin’s The Mummy made back its modest budget this weekend at the box office, but the horror film was no match for two very successful holdovers.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie held onto the top spot for a third straight weekend, after bringing in another $35 million between Friday and Sunday, Comscore reported. To date, the film has earned $355 million domestically.
Project Hail Mary came in second place with $20.4 million. After five weekends in theaters, the sci-fi saga starring Ryan Gosling has earned $285 million domestically.
The Mummy opened in third place with $13.5 million. The R-rated horror film from writer-director Lee Cronin played in 3,304 locations, for a per theater average of $4,090, according to Comscore.
The thriller earned $20.5 million abroad, for a global weekend debut of $34.0 million against a reported $22 million budget.
The film about a kidnapped girl who returns to her family horribly disfigured eight years later, stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Verónica Falcón.
Cronin produced the film alongside James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville. It was distributed by Warner Bros.
The Drama came in fourth place with $4.8 million. Since it opened three weeks ago, the romantic drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson has earned $40 million domestically.
You, Me & Tuscany rounded out the top five with $3.8 million in its second weekend. After getting off to a slow start last weekend, the romantic comedy from producer Will Packer and director Kat Coiro has earned $14.3 million in two weeks domestically against an $18 million production budget.
Next weekend should bring a major shift at the top of the box office when Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, moonwalks into theaters. The Lionsgate film is tracking to earn around $60 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But depending on Jackson’s fans, it could make much more.
