KPop Demon Hunters was the most-watched movie in Netflix history.
Now the animated film is getting a sequel with original filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans set to return. The two also inked an exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal with the streamer.
Netflix recently announced the sequel, just as the film struck gold at the 2026 Oscars where it nabbed trophies for best animated feature and best original song for “Golden,” the first K-Pop single to ever win the award.
KPop Demon Hunters was released in June 2025, and resonated with viewers around the world — thanks to its blend of Korean pop music and animation.
According to Netflix’s 2025 Engagement Report, the film racked up 482 million views in just six months.

Netflix executives highlighted the movie’s global impact as a driving force for a sequel.
“Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences — they sparked a global fandom,” Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, said in a statement. “We’re proud to grow this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans around the world.”
Sony Pictures Animation developed and produced the film for Netflix.
It followed the trio Rumi, Mira, and Zoey of fictional K-Pop group Huntr/x, who lead double lives as demon hunters.

Kang and Appelhans co-wrote and directed the movie, which was inspired by Kang’s Korean heritage.
“For me, this is incredibly meaningful,” said Kang. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that audiences want more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and this is only the beginning.”
Appelhans echoed that sentiment, adding: “These characters have become like family to us, and their world feels like a second home. We’re excited to continue their journey, challenge them, and evolve the way music, animation, and storytelling come together.”
Details on a release date for the sequel will be announced later.
