Joe Jackson has big plans for his famous sons in the first official trailer for Michael Jackson biopic, Michael.
“You’re either a winner or a loser,” says Joe, played by Emmy winner Colman Domingo. “Y’all want to work in a steel mill for the rest or your days?”
“No sir,” his sons respond before they’re shown perfecting their on-stage routines.
The Jackson family patriarch demands dedication as he molds his sons into The Jackson Five. But Michael wants more as his star rises — a solo career.
“I love my family, but I just want to do my own thing,” says Michael, played by the King of Pop’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson.
Jaafar, who is the son of Jermaine Jackson, embodies his uncle’s voice and dance moves.
When he tells his dad he needs time “to think” about the group’s future, Joe is not pleased. “I told you what to think,” he shoots back at Michael in front of the family.
The cast also includes Nia Long as Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson.
“Michael, I knew you were different from the moment you were born,” she says.
Kendrick Sampson co-stars as legendary producer Quincy Jones. Miles Teller plays the singer’s longtime manager John Branca. Larenz Tate portrays Motown founder Berry Gordy, Laura Harrier plays Motown executive Suzanne de Passe, Kat Graham portrays Diana Ross, Juliano Krue Valdi is a young Michael Jackson.
The authorized biopic is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) from a script written by John Logan (Gladiator).
“The film tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world,” according to the official description.
Michael was originally scheduled for release in April 2025, before it was moved to this year. The film arrives in theaters on April 24, 2026.
