Quinton Aaron is vowing to regain his health after suffering a near-fatal stroke earlier this year.
The Blind Side actor said he is determined to regain the ability to walk again, during an interview that aired Monday, April 20, on Good Morning America.
Reporter Steve Osunsami sat down with Aaron, 41, at a hospital in Atlanta, where the actor is undergoing intensive physical rehabilitation.
“The doctors projected that it could take months, it could be a year, or up to a year,” Aaron shared. “I said, ‘I don’t claim that time frame. I’ll be walking a lot sooner than you think.’ That’s just how I believe. That’s how, you know, between me, my faith, and my relationship with God.”
Aaron rose to prominence with his role as former NFL star Michael Oher in the award-winning 2009 sports drama, The Blind Side.
In January, the actor suffered a spinal stroke, as previously reported. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a spinal stroke happens when blood flow stops in the spinal cord.
At the time of his hospitalization, Aaron’s wife Margarita DeLeon told TMZ the actor collapsed at their home and she tended to him until paramedics arrived.
Weeks later, news surfaced that DeLeon was still married to another man. In response, Aaron’s brother Jarred took legal action and filed for a restraining order to prevent DeLeon from coming near his sibling.
Aaron and DeLeon exchanged vows in December 2024. In the interview with ABC, the actor explained how he found out his marriage was never legal.
He said he was in a coma for four days after the stroke and could not breathe on his own. When he woke up, his family told him his wife was still married to another man and could not legally make medical decisions for him.
Aaron said family members got the bombshell news about DeLeon from an attorney, who revealed she had been married to a man named Eric Guzman since the 1990s. “That’s what eventually led to the doctors removing her from around me,” Aaron said.
“The entire time we were together, she told me she had been divorced for 10-plus years,” he stated. “She even told the person where we were getting married, ‘Oh yes, I have all the documents. I can email over to you the divorce decree.'”
The actor admitted he never saw DeLeon’s divorce papers. “That’s my biggest mistake,” he said.
DeLeon told ABC she had no clue her divorce was never finalized. The outlet also spoke with her estranged husband, who confirmed they both thought the marriage had officially ended. Guzman filed new divorce papers in February.
