The film arrives in theaters on December 2 and begins streaming Dec. 9 on Apple TV+.
“I was going through something that night,” Smith said on “The Daily Show.”
The film is inspired by the true story of a slave known as “Whipped Peter.”
The book “chronicles lessons learned in the course of a difficult but riveting journey,” the publisher says.
Smith leads the cast as a slave named Peter who escapes a Louisiana plantation.
The comedian last hosted the Academy Awards in 2016.
“Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” Rock quipped.
