The family of Bishop T.D. Jakes is asking for prayers as the megachurch pastor recovers from a medical emergency he suffered during his Sunday sermon.
Jakes was standing in front of the congregation at The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 24, when he suddenly slurred his words, began shaking, and dropped his microphone.
His daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, posted a video to Instagram on Sunday night, saying they wanted to give an update on Jakes’ condition before the day ended.
“Thank you immensely for your prayers. They are working… it’s truly been a blessing,” said Sarah, who is also a minister.

Touré noted that Jakes’ parishioners, friends and fans have been asking what they can do to help. His response, “Keep praying.”
“We felt those prayers. Obviously, today could have been a tragic day, but if it wasn’t for the mercy of God, by the Grace of God, Bishop is doing well. He’s recovering well, he’s under medical care. He’s strong, we’re trying to get him to sit down,” Touré explained.
Sarah concluded by saying, “I’m so grateful that he’s already beginning to improve and I think it’s just a reminder, even going into this holiday season… take the time to be grateful for all the people God has given you.”
The family did not disclose what caused Jakes to become ill.
Shortly after Sunday’s incident, The Potter’s House issued a statement, saying Jakes “experienced a slight health incident” and was receiving medical care.
“Bishop Jakes is stable and under the care of medical professionals. The entire Potter’s House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community,” the statement read.
Jakes, 67, and his wife Serita Jakes raised five children — Sarah, Cora Jakes-Coleman, Thomas Jakes, Jermaine Jakes, and Jamar Jakes.
The pastor founded The Potter’s House in 1996. Since then, the 30-thousand member church has grown and now has additional sites in Frisco, Texas; Fort Worth, Texas; and Denver, Colorado, according to its website.
