Tasha Smith, who plays Marley, has been upped to a series regular and will also direct two episodes.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Buteau said the upcoming season will have all female directors.
“I always dreamed of working on a show that was a Black show, that was a queer show, where all the directors were female,” Buteau said.
“Women are amazing — period, point blank, end of discussion — and it’s so important to give people opportunities that they deserve and are very hard for them to get,” she added.
In addition to Tasha Smith, Kim Nguyen (Prom Dates, Never Have I Ever), Thembi Banks (Young. Wild. Free. and Insecure), and Amy Aniobi (Insecure, 2 Dope Queens) will be calling the shots behind the camera.
Aniobi is also this season’s showrunner and an executive producer.
The scripted comedy series revolves around plus-sized stylist Mavis Beaumont (played by Buteau) as she looks for love while growing her brand and spreading body positivity at the same time.
The returning cast includes Tone Bell, Liza Treyger, Peppermint, and Marouane Zotti.
Buteau (Babes, Moonshot) and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (My Name Is Earl, New Girl) are co-creators and executive producers on the show, which was inspired by Buteau’s acclaimed 2020 book of essays by the same name.
Production on season 2 has already started in New York, Netflix shared.
A24 and Anne Hong from Mosaic produce the show.
