Penny Marshall, who became a household name after starring on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley has died. She was 75.
Marshall’s publicist, Michelle Bega, told The New York Daily News that the actress and director passed away peacefully Monday at her home in the Hollywood Hills due to complications from diabetes.
“Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall,” the Marshall family said in a statement.
Marshall was born on Oct. 15, 1943, and grew up in the Bronx.
Her brother, producer and director Garry Marshall, created the ABC series Laverne & Shirley.
The sitcom co-starred Cindy Williams as Shirley Feeney, Laverne’s co-worker at a Milwaukee brewery. It was a runaway hit and aired from 1976 to 1983.
After the series ended, Penny went on to direct such popular films as Big, which earned her the distinction of becoming the first woman to helm a movie that grossed more than $100 million.
She also directed Jumpin’ Jack Flash, A League of Their Own and The Preacher’s Wife.
