Netflix released its viewing report for the first half of 2025, and a lot of people are watching movies and TV shows on the platform.
According to the streamer’s Engagement Report, subscribers watched more than 95 billion hours of content in the first six months of the year.
The report, released July 17, noted that 2/3 of Netflix users live outside the United States. Still, the two most-watched movies featured African Americans in lead roles.
Back in Action is the No. 1 movie on Netflix so far this year, with 165 million views. Jamie Foxx executive produced and co-stars in the spy comedy alongside Cameron Diaz. Seth Gordon directed the Netflix original film, which premiered in January. It marked the first movie Diaz had done since 2014. The cast also included Kyle Chandler and Glenn Close.
Tyler Perry’s Straw, about a desperate single mother played by Taraji P. Henson, came in second place (103 million). Perry wrote, directed and co-produced the film.
The LifeList, a romantic dramedy starring Sofia Carson, was third (96 million).
Exterritorial from Germany was fourth (88 million).
The action thriller Havoc starring Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant and Forest Whitaker was fifth (87 million).
On the TV side, British series Adolescence took the top spot with 145 million views. The series premiered in March, and follows a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murdering a classmate. Last week the series picked up 13 Emmy nominations, including outstanding limited or anthology series.
South Korean series Squid Game was also a strong performer, with season 2 coming in second place and season 3 in third place. Combined, the two seasons had 189 million views.
Conspiracy thriller Zero Day starring Oscar winner Robert De Niro alongside Angela Bassett came in fourth place (61 million).
The Harlan Coben limited series Missing You was fifth (58 million).
Season 1 of Mara Brock Akil’s young adult series Forever also did well (19 million), but did not make the top 10.
