Ne-Yo says times have changed since he was a kid and parents have “almost forgotten” how to parent.
The Grammy-winning R&B singer sat down for an interview with actress and former video girl Gloria Velez for VladTV.
Ne-Yo shared his thoughts on people who post everything on social media, comedians facing censorship for offending fans, and parents who allow their children to undergo gender transitions.
The “Miss Independent” singer said he has “no issue” with the LGBTQ community, but he does have problems with parents who never say “no.”
“I feel like parents have almost forgotten what the role of a parent is,” he said. “It’s like, if your little boy comes to you and says, ‘Daddy, I want to be a girl,’ and you just let him rock with that? He’s five.”

The 43-year-old singer added that he believes parents should set limits.
“If you let this 5-year-old boy decide to eat candy all day, he’s gonna do that. Like, when did it become a good idea to let a 5-year-old, let a 6-year-old, let a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision?” Ne-Yo said. “When did that happen? I don’t understand that.”
He then brought up a controversial California bill that says courts deciding custody and visitation cases must consider whether each parent has affirmed the child’s gender identity. Assembly Bill 957, also known as the Transgender, Gender-Diverse and Intersex Youth Empowerment Act, was introduced in February 2023. A California Assembly Judiciary Committee advanced the bill in June.
Ne-Yo said the proposed legislation “makes no sense.”
“I just personally come from an era where a man was a man and a woman was a woman, and it wasn’t but two genders,” he stated.
Ne-Yo is not without controversy himself. The singer and dancer has faced backlash for fathering seven children with multiple women.
He shares daughter Madilyn, 12, and son Mason, 11, with ex-fiancée Monyetta Shaw, according to Page Six. He is also dad to Shaffer Chimere Jr., 7, Roman Alexander-Raj, 5, and Isabella Rose, 2, with ex-wife Crystal Renay. He fathered Braiden, who arrived in 2021, and Brixton, who was born in February, with then-girlfriend Sadé Jenea.
On July 7, Ne-Yo uploaded a carousel of photos to Instagram that showed him bonding with all seven of his children.
The caption on the post read: “I’m a FATHER before I’m anything else. Not money, not fame, not even the love of the craft. I do this for THEM. THEY are my reason. I’m nowhere near perfect and that’s ok. My kids love me. And I’d die, kill, steal, whatever to make sure they never need for anything. The best thing I’ve ever done.”
