Mo’Nique has a message for fellow comedians Sherri Shepherd and Kym Whitley — stop with the “backhanded” compliments.
The Oscar-winning actress and comedian, who leads the cast of the new BET+ horror film The Reading from producer Lee Daniels, called out Shepherd and Whitley for bringing up her past disputes with fellow celebrities during their “Two Funny Mamas” podcast.

The brouhaha began when Shepherd praised Mo’Nique for her performance in The Reading.
“Mo’Nique won the Oscar for Precious for a reason. People underestimate comics, she’s really, really good. She’s a great actress,” Shepherd said on the podcast.

The Sherri host then noted that Mo’Nique has rubbed many people in the entertainment industry the wrong way, and was “blackballed” for years.
“Personality-wise, she’s always getting in trouble, always. If it’s not with another comic, D.L. Hughley, then it’s with the industry, it’s somebody,” Shepherd added.
Whitley nodded her head in agreement and said Mo’Nique tends to be at odds with “somebody.”
After getting wind of the segment, Mo’Nique took to Instagram on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to tell the two comedians to stop with the “negativity.”

The Reading star began by expressing gratitude to Shepherd and Whitley for complimenting her acting skills, before calling the two out (she even tagged them in the post to make sure they saw it).
“First, thank you for your compliments regarding my talents and performance in The Reading,” Mo’Nique wrote in her post. “I couldn’t help but notice though, that you two said because of my personality I’m always ‘getting in trouble.'”
Mo’Nique, who in May called comedian D.L. Hughley a “b–ch” and the N-word amid a dispute over who was the headliner at a comedy show, continued by unloading on Shepherd and Whitley.
“You then attempted to show a connection between my personality and me being blackballed, along with the fallout I had with Brother DL Hughley. In addition, you two within the same breath mentioned how we as comics are ‘underestimated,'” she wrote. “First thing, kids with their parents, criminals with the law, and slaves with their masters, get into trouble, and last time I checked, I don’t fit into any of these categories to get in trouble with anyone mentioned, do you two?”

Mo’Nique admitted she can be outspoken, but insisted it’s because she speaks up when she thinks someone is being treated unfairly.
“My personality is of such where I have to speak up and out against injustices, so [Black women] can stop being as you both said, ‘underrated,'” she added. “And if you notice, I haven’t ever started a conversation about you two that involved any negativity in any way in all of the years I’ve known you two.”
Mo’Nique concluded her post by saying, “Anytime the team of you two sisters would like to speak with the team of my husband and I, we welcome it. Thank you two again for the compliments, though backhanded, and please know regardless, I still love you both to life, sisters!'”
