Night two of the Democratic National Convention saw New York Times elevator operator Jacquelyn Brittany give a powerful testimonial about Joe Biden’s empathy and humanity. A virtual state roll call vote formally nominated the former vice president, and Jill Biden delivered an inspiring speech about her husband.

The evening ended with John Legend taking the stage to entertain and inspire with music.

Legend performed a stirring rendition of “Never Break” from his newest album Bigger Love. The musician took part in the event virtually and was introduced by Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross.

The singer played the piano and was accompanied by backup singers who were socially distanced from him to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines. Legend’s song struck the right chord for the evening and the lyrics of the inspirational ballad were very timely.

“We will never break / We will never break / Built on a foundation / Strong enough to stay / We will never break,” Legend crooned. “As the water rises / And the mountains shake / Our love will remain.”

Legend expressed his gratitude and the meaning behind the song in a Tweet later in the evening. “Thanks to the @DemConvention for asking me to close out a powerful night with my new song #NeverBreak,” he wrote. “The song is about love, hope and resilience, and I think we could all use some of that right now.”

The convention began on Monday with a powerful speech from Michelle Obama, and will continue through Thursday when Biden addresses the nation.
