The cause of death for John Amos has been released.

Amos, 84, died from congestive heart failure on Aug. 21, according to the death certificate TMZ obtained on Wednesday from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The Good Times and Roots star was cremated on Aug. 30, nine days after he passed away in Los Angeles. The death certificate said no autopsy was performed.

The actor’s publicist, Belinda Foster, did not announce his death until Oct. 1.

Shockingly, Amos’ daughter Shannon Amos said she learned about her dad’s passing from news reports.

“We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you,” Shannon wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, John’s extended family released a statement on Oct. 2, saying the actor’s son Kelly Christopher Amos, known to relatives as KC, kept his dad hidden away before his death.

“Over the past year, John Amos was isolated from his family and close friends by Kelly ‘KC’ Amos, Eugene Brummet and Belinda Foster,” the statement read. “Despite our repeated attempts to maintain contact, KC prevented access to him, controlled and monitored his calls and severed ties with John’s daughter Shannon Amos, his brother Leslie “Syl” Franklin, his grandchildren Quiera Colston and Jhazz Williams, his business manager Paul Baldessare, his god-daughter Amy Goudy, his niece Sherri Korsun, his former accountant and other close family members, friends, and loved ones.”

The Hollywood Reporter published an article in November 2023, saying Amos’ two children were “at war” over their father’s care.

Shannon spoke with the outlet and accused her brother KC of elder abuse, neglect and isolating their dad from loved ones.

Meanwhile, KC told THR Shannon has been “a bully” since they were children.

Despite the family drama, John Amos said in the article that his children were just going through “sibling rivalry.”
