Despite months of controversy over a lack of Black members and an ongoing boycott, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominations Monday morning for the Golden Globe Awards.

The films Belfast, The Power of the Dog, King Richard, and Being the Ricardos all picked up multiple nominations.

King Richard received four nods, including best motion picture – drama;  best actor – drama for Will Smith, best supporting actress for Aunjanue Ellis, and best original song for “Be Alive” from Dixson and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

Will Smith will compete in the best actor category against Mahershala Ali for Swan Song, Javier Bardem in Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth.

The nominations were announced in Beverly Hills at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with the HFPA’s new president Helen Hoehne and Snoop Dogg reading the list of nominees.

The announcements came amid fallout that saw the movie studios, TV networks, and Hollywood heavyweights cutting ties with the HFPA. NBC, the show’s longtime TV home, also announced it will not broadcast the 2022 awards show.

Since the fallout began, the HFPA has announced a series of reforms, including adding more Black members to its ranks after a Los Angeles Times exposé in February 2021 revealed the group didn’t have a single Black member.
