Explosions, weapons, and car crashes are just a glimpse of what’s coming in season 4 of Godfather of Harlem.

MGM+ recently released a first-look teaser trailer for the hit crime drama, featuring Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker’s character, Bumpy Johnson, declaring, “I wanted to rebuild Harlem.”

Instead, Bumpy is “ramping up” for war.

The new season introduces actor Rome Flynn as a young Frank Lucas — a small-town North Carolina native, who arrives in Harlem and quickly becomes a major player in the drug trade.

While Lucas initially clashes with Harlem crime boss Bumpy, the two later become allies.

The series will see Lucas’ story unfold ten years earlier than it did in the 2007 film American Gangster.

According to the official description for season 4, “Bumpy Johnson continues his bloody war for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families, while contending with the emergence of a potential rival in newly arrived Black gangster Frank Lucas (Flynn). After Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death, Bumpy must also grapple with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers.”

Returning cast members include Ilfenesh Hadera as Mayme Johnson, Lucy Fry as Stella Gigante, and Erik LaRay Harvey as Del Chance.

The drama was created by Chris Brancato and the late Paul Eckstein and is produced by 20th Television.

Executive producers include Brancato, Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi, James Acheson, Markuann Smith, Ray Quinlan, Michael Panes, and Stephen Schiff, with Swizz Beatz as executive music producer.

Godfather of Harlem is one of MGM+’s top-performing original series and its most popular show among African American audiences, with 54 percent of its viewers identifying as African American during season 3, according to MGM+.

Season 4 is set to premiere April 13, 2025, on MGM+.
