Tyler Perry wrote a poignant social media post on Mother’s Day, explaining why he hasn’t visited his mother’s grave since she died 12 years ago.

In his Facebook post, the Madea Family Funeral director and actor wrote he “did everything” he could for his mother when she was alive.

“Since my Mother’s gravestone was placed, I have never been back to her grave,” Perry began. “I’ve never even sent flowers to it. It’s been almost 12 years now, and I haven’t done it once. I know we all have our own way of coping and grieving, but for me, I can honestly say in my heart of hearts that I don’t feel the need to because I did everything I could for her when she was alive.”

He continued, “I showered her with love, I took care of her, and I gave her flowers while she was living. So to all of you who have mother’s on the top side of the soil, it is my hope that you will feel the same sense of peace that I have when that time comes. It is my hope that you and she both know you’ve done all you could for her and all you could to celebrate her, while letting her know that she is loved. God bless you all. Happy Mother’s Day.”

Nearly 30,000 people commented and many praised Perry for his honesty.

“I echo those sentiments, Tyler, and like you feel, I did everything possible to show my mom just how much I loved her and cared for her when she was here,” one follower shared.

Another person wrote, “Thank you Mr. Perry, I feel guilty that I don’t go to my mother’s/father’s grave. But I’ve continually loved them with all my heart.”

Perry continues to pay tribute to his mother through his work and speeches.

Last month, the Sistas executive producer acknowledged his mother when he accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Oscars.

“My mother taught me to refuse hate,” Perry said during the speech. “She taught me to refuse blanket judgement.”

Perry has also said his titular character of Madea is a combination of both his mother and aunt.
