‘Walk It Out’ Rapper DJ Unk’s Cause of Death Released

DJ Unk, a rapper, disc jockey and hype man best known for his 2000s hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” has died. He was 43.

The Atlanta hip-hop artist, who was born Anthony Platt, passed away on Friday, Jan. 24.

His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, shared the news of his death in a Facebook post.

“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU, ANTHONY, FOREVER,” Long-Platt wrote.

The artist’s music label, Big Oomp Records, confirmed his passing later in the day with a statement on Instagram.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk.’ On behalf of Big Oomp Records and the BOR Family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit,” the statement read.

“Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come,” the statement continued. “His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten. We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

On Sunday, DJ Unk’s wife told TMZ his death was caused by a heart attack. She said he passed away in his sleep after going into cardiac arrest. Long-Platt added that drugs did not play a role in her husband’s death.

Big Oomp Records announced a candlelight vigil for DJ Unk will take place today at 5 p.m. in Atlanta.
