Tyler Perry’s latest film, Divorce in the Black, is defying critics and breaking records.

Despite receiving a rare zero percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has become a hit with audiences, leading to significant viewership and subscriber growth on Prime Video.

On Monday, Aug. 12, Variety reported Nielsen figures showed the drama was streamed over 498 million minutes within the first four days of its July 11 release, translating to approximately 3.5 million views.

Additionally, Divorce in the Black has reportedly driven more subscriptions of Prime Video in the U.S. than any previous Amazon MGM Studios-produced movie.

Since its debut in July, the film reached the number one spot on Prime Video’s U.S. movie list and made its debut on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart.

The thriller tells the story of Ava and Dallas, an unhappy couple on the brink of divorce. The plot thickens when Ava tries to move on with another man, and Dallas becomes violent and spiteful.

After weeks of criticism of his film, Perry responded last month to the mixed reviews. Best known for his Madea franchise, the director, writer, actor, and producer emphasized his commitment to storytelling that resonates with his audience.

“If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell. I know for a fact that what I’m doing is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing,” Perry said in a podcast interview with Keke Palmer.

The drama stars Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict.

Hardrict defended the film in an interview with TMZ, expressing his gratitude for the audience’s support.

“The people love the movie. And we do it for the people. If the culture rockin’ with it, it’s all love,” Hardrict said.

Amazon did not disclose the number of subscribers or identify which Amazon MGM film previously brought the highest subscriber growth, Variety reported.
