Coolio Remembered by MC Hammer, Questlove and Ice Cube

Coolio is being remembered by the music community following his death at age 59.

The rapper, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., died Wednesday at a friend’s home in Los Angeles. No cause of death was given.

Coolio was best known for his 1995 single “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the film Dangerous Minds. The Grammy-winning single became one of the most successful rap songs of all time and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

His music was also featured in the films Space Jam, Clueless, The Big Payback, and Panther, and he wrote the theme song for the Nickelodeon series Kenan & Kel.

As news of his death spread, friends and fellow musicians shared tributes on social media.

“One of the nicest dudes I’ve known. Good people. R.I.P. Coolio,” MC Hammer tweeted.

“My deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family of @Coolio,” Martin Lawrence shared on Twitter.

“Peaceful Journey Brother,” Questlove wrote on Twitter.

“Coolio was the West Coast Flavor Flav. He loved telling everyone that. We was supposed to perform together this Tuesday. #RIP my friend,” tweeted Flavor Flav.

“This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace,” Ice Cube tweeted.
