Alexia Jayy won season 29 of NBC’s The Voice earlier this year. Now she is winning over BET viewers.

When the performer before her forgot to introduce Jayy Sunday night at the BET Awards during the musical tribute to Lauryn Hill, viewers took to social media asking the name of the woman who performed Fugees single “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

BET posted a response on Wednesday, July 1, to clear up any confusion. The network included a clip of Jayy’s performance and a caption offering a few details about the singer.

“Meet Alexia Jayy — the FIRST Black woman to win The Voice,’ Season 29 champion,” the caption read. “She’s already stood alongside Ms. Lauryn Hill at the Grammys, honoring Roberta Flack, and became part of the family. Now she delivered a phenomenal tribute to Ms. Hill herself — and we are so grateful for her voice and her energy. You better SANG!”

Killing Me Softly was written and recorded by folk singer Lori Liebermann in 1971, in a collaboration with songwriting team Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel.

Roberta Flack released a version of the single and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with it in 1973.

Alexia Jayy performed the song near the end of the tribute to Lauryn Hill, who was honored with BET’s Living Legend Icon Award.

The War and Treaty opened the performance with “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” They were followed by SZA and Doechii, who performed the Fugees hit “Ready or Not.”

Other tribute performers included Nas, Doja Cat, Lizzo, Rapsody, selah, Tierra Whack, Zion Marley and YG Marley. Common and Queen Latifah had the audience at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles dancing with their cover of “Lost Ones.”

The performances trended throughout Sunday night on social media, with some viewers describing the tribute as “one of the best.”
