Family members of late singer Angie Stone are putting together a public memorial for fans to “honor her life, music and legacy.”
In a statement released Monday night via the singer’s Instagram account, Stone’s family — including her daughter Diamond Stone and son Michael Archer — thanked the public for their “love and well wishes during what is an extremely difficult time.”
“Angie was an example for Black women and girls everywhere. Angie also loved and championed for Black men with her Number One Hit entitled ‘Brotha,'” the statement read. “Angie Stone was a pioneer of rap music that began with a female rap trio, The Sequence, and ultimately led to her solo career that defined neo soul.”

The family noted that Stone was committed to giving back to the community through her Angel Stripes, the Angie Stone Foundation — dedicated to raising awareness about the arts and bringing people together.
The Grammy-nominated singer was a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority and had recently been attending college for ministry, according to her family.
“Her love of God and her faith led her to have a deep desire to share her belief in God and bring more people to Christ,” the family’s statement said.
Stone, 63, was killed in a car accident in the early morning hours on Saturday, March 1.
The singer-songwriter and members of her band were returning to Atlanta after performing the night before in Mobile, Alabama, when their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van collided with an 18-wheeler truck, Stone’s publicist said in a statement to Urban Hollywood 411.
The collision happened on Interstate 65 about 5 miles south of the Montgomery city limits. The cause is under investigation.
Stone was declared deceased at the scene. Eight others in the van suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals, authorities said.
Private funeral services are still being worked out along with the public memorial.
“Even though Angie is no longer with us physically her family wants you to keep her legacy alive,” the singer’s reps said.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Angie Stone was known as one of neo-soul’s leading ladies. She released a string of hits, including “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” “Brotha” and “Everyday” (one of several songs she wrote with her former partner D’Angelo).
She broke into the music business as a teenager in the 1970s when she formed hip-hop trio The Sequence with her high school friends Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisolm.
Stone was a three-time Grammy nominee. She won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. And in 2021, received the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors.
