Hillman College will welcome back students for another year.
On Friday, Oct. 2, Netflix announced A Different World has been renewed for a second season, just over a week after the sequel series premiered on Sept. 24.
The next chapter will follow Deborah Wayne and her classmates into their sophomore year, with new romances, changing friendships and unfinished business.
According to Netflix, the students will return to campus after “transformative summers” with a “New Year, New Me” attitude. But their fresh starts get complicated as they face past decisions, uncertain futures and deeper questions about their purpose, while getting themselves into trouble along the way.

The renewal follows a strong debut for the series, which landed at No. 4 on the platform’s Global Top 10 English-language TV list with 4.2 million views.
“It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience,” creator, showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride said in a statement Friday. “We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations.”
Executive producer and director Debbie Allen also celebrated the news, thanking viewers for helping the show reach audiences around the world.
“A Different World brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and Heart!” Allen said. “Thank you for getting us into the Top 10 worldwide! And now, gear up! We’re coming back at you with season 2!!”
The first season introduced a new generation of students at the fictional historically Black college. At the center is Deborah, the free-spirited and rebellious youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.
Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah, with original stars Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy returning as her parents.
Other returning cast members include Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, Jenifer Lewis, Jada Pinkett Smith, Karen Malina White, Ajai Sanders, Dawnn Lewis and Glynn Turman.
The cast also includes Alijah Kai Haggins, Kennedi Reece, Cornell Young, Jordan Aaron Hall and Chibuikem Uche. Method Man and Tichina Arnold join the series.
“We are so excited to see how audiences around the world have embraced the next chapter of this beloved series,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s vice president of comedy series. “We believed in this incredible team from day one, and can’t wait to see what unfolds next year at Hillman College.”
In addition to Pride and Allen, Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Mandy Summers are executive producers.
