Trailer for Salt-N-Pepa Biopic Unveiled by Lifetime

Lifetime has released the official trailer for its upcoming biopic on Salt-N-Pepa, one of the first all-female rap groups to make it big in the music industry.

The scripted miniseries titled Salt-N-Pepa will tell the story of nursing students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton as they rose to success.

Salt-N-Pepa became the first female rap act to go platinum, paving the way for other female rappers who followed.

G.G. Townson and Laila Odom lead the cast, As previously reported. Townson plays Cheryl “Salt” James, and Odom portrays Sandra “Pepa” Denton.

The miniseries will also star Cleveland Berto as music producer “Hurby Azor,” Jermel Howard as rapper “Treach,” and Monique Paul as “DJ Spinderella.”

Salt-N-Pepa were credited with bringing fun and femininity to rap music. Denton and James became friends while they were nursing students at Queensborough Community College in Queens, New York.

The pair grew up in different boroughs in New York City. Pepa, who was born in Jamaica, lived in St. Alban, Queens, while Salt was raised in Bushwick, Brooklyn. They created a diss track that became a local hit. Soon after, Deidra “Spinderella” Roper joined the duo as their official DJ.

Salt-N-Pepa landed a deal to make their debut 1986 LP “Hot, Cool & Vicious.” Propelled by the breakout hit “Push It,” the album went platinum. Among the Grammy-winning group’s other hits were “Let’s Talk About Sex” (1990), “Shoop” (1993), and “Whatta Man” (1993).

Denton and James continue to make appearances together. Spinderella left the group and in 2019.

Denton and James serve as producers on the three-hour project and have licensed their music, including the hit singles “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “What a Man,” “Shoop” and “Push It.”

Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere of Flavor Unit have signed on as executive producers, along with Jesse Collins (The New Edition Story). Abdul Williams (The New Edition Story) wrote the script.

The release date has not yet been announced.
