R&B singer Nivea has revealed she was diagnosed with leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells.
Nivea, 44, shared her diagnosis on an episode of the “Cadillac Chronicles” podcast uploaded to Instagram on July 21.
After being asked to share something she is thankful for, the mother-of-4 revealed her health battle.
“Well, first of all, I was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, and I’m so grateful to God. I’ve been going through treatment, and everything is going great, so far. And I expect it to continue. Amen, amen, amen,” she said. “I’m very grateful for life.”
She admitted the diagnosis has given her a new perspective.
“It’s so cliche to say you don’t know the time nor the hour, but it’s true and it just helped me put a lot of things in perspective, and I live in gratitude, like, religiously, and I’m just grateful for everything,” she said.
According to the American Cancer Society, there are several types of leukemia, each with different treatment options and outlooks.
Born Nivea Hamilton, the Atlanta native broke onto the music scene in the early 2000s with a feature on Mystikal’s “Danger (Been So Long).”
The Grammy-nominated singer scored her own hit with “Don’t Mess with My Man” (2002), which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her other singles include “Okay” (2004) and “Laundromat” (2003).
In the podcast interview, Nivea said she is looking toward the future and focusing on her family and career.
“I’m definitely back into my music, and I’m going to school for audio engineering. I’ve always wanted to learn how to engineer, and mixing engineering in particular,” she shared. “But just in general, doing all the things, loving on my children, and just being grateful and taking every opportunity that comes my way.”
In 2021, she appeared on BET Presents: The Encore, a reality music series about a group of R&B singers coming together in hopes of forming a supergroup.
The series also featured Shamari DeVoe (Blaque), Irish Grinstead (702), LeMisha Grinstead (702), Fallon King (Cherish), Felisha King (Cherish), Pamela Long (Total), Aubrey O’Day (Danity Kane), and Kiely Williams (3LW). The women ultimately decided to go their separate ways.
In 2023, Nivea appeared on the first season of the Peacock reality dating series, Queen’s Court, alongside Evelyn Lozada and Tamar Braxton. The women were introduced to 21 suitors in a quest to find a potential “king,” but none of the relationships worked out, as previously reported.
Nivea was married to music producer The-Dream from 2004 to 2008, and they share three children. She also has a son with rapper Lil Wayne.
