FX has officially announced its upcoming Snowfall spinoff series on the characters Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons will be called The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.

The network unveiled the title, a first-look photo, and new cast members in a press release on Tuesday, Nov. 2. The image shows a pensive Wanda (Gail Bean) leaning on Leon (Isaiah John) for support.

The main cast also includes Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, as previously reported.

Newly added cast members are Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, and Demetrius Grosse. Snowfall actor Quincy Chad will reprise his role as “Big Deon.”

Set in 1990s Los Angeles, the new series follows Wanda and Leon “as they fight to take West Coast rap mainstream while gang wars erupt and record labels move to exploit hip hop culture for their own gain,” according to the official description.

The drama series is produced by FX Productions.

Executive producers include Malcolm Spellman (Empire and Bel-Air), Snowfall co-creator Dave Andron, and Paul Garnes (Queen Sugar and Origin).  Also serving as executive producers are Snowfall producers Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson.

On the original show, Wanda was a former member of Franklin’s crew, whose life was destroyed by crack. As she began to pick up the pieces, she married Leon in Ghana.

The spinoff was first announced in 2023. Malcolm Spellman was brought in to write the pilot and serve as showrunner once the project was picked up to series.

“This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said in a previous statement. “We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material.”

Snowfall was created by the late John Singleton, Eric Amadio and Dave Andron. The crime drama explored the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s South Central L.A., and ran for six seasons on FX from 2017 to 2023.

The Drop: A Snowfall Saga will premiere later this year on FX and Hulu, and will be available on Disney+ internationally.
