ABC just handed Shifting Gears good news.

The network announced Thursday, April 30, the comedy series has been renewed for a third season. Also returning for the 2026-2027 broadcast season will be the network’s Scrubs revival.

Scrubs returned in February 2026, with original stars Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison after going off the air in 2010. ABC renewed the medical comedy for a second season and its 11th season overall.

The supporting cast includes Vanessa Bayer, Rachel Bilson, Joel Kim Booster, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, Neil Flynn, Lisa Gilroy, David Gridley, Phill Lewis, Robert Maschio, X Mayo, Christa Miller, Layla Mohammadi, Amanda Morrow, Andy Ridings, and Michael James Scott.

Workplace comedy Shifting Gears debuted in January 2025. The series follows stubborn widower Matt, played by comedy veteran Tim Allen.

Matt owns a classic car restoration shop, and has a sudden life change when his estranged daughter Riley (Katt Dennings) shows up on his doorstep with her two kids.

Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Seann William Scott, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis round out the main cast.

In December, we spoke with Mitchell about his role as Stitch, an employee at Matt’s auto shop.

“I work the sewing machine. I make seat covers and all that for seats,” the actor told Urban Hollywood 411.

Mitchell said when he was first approached about joining the comedy, he’d spent seven years on NCIS: New Orleans and wasn’t sure about returning to the grueling pace of a weekly series.

“It was so funny, because I call myself semi-retiring. Just laid back, not quitting, but just saying, ‘I’m not coming out of my house for anything after seven years at NCIS: New Orleans,’” he shared.

What sold him was the chance to work with Tim Allen again, after the two appeared together on the 1999 film, Galaxy Quest.

“They sent over a script and a letter saying that they would hope that I’d really consider taking this role,” he recalled. “I was like, that’s a no brainer. Tim Allen is Mr. TV.”

Mitchell said in December he felt confident the show would be renewed — and he was right.

Premiere dates for the new seasons of Shifting Gears and Scrubs will be announced later.
