And the Oscar for best picture goes to… One Battle After Another.

The thriller about a group of ex-revolutionaries being hunted down by a rogue colonel, picked up six trophies on Sunday, March 15, including best picture, the first ever best casting Oscar, and best director and adapted screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson.

Backstage, Anderson addressed criticism about the film’s portrayal of its Black female characters, particularly “Perfidia,” played by Teyana Taylor.

“It’s complicated,” Anderson told reporters.

“Teyana has talked about it a lot. I know that we have the portrayal of many different characters, in particular, her character, who is so flawed,” the filmmaker explained.

Sinners entered the ceremony with an historic 16 nominations. By the end of the night, the Ryan Coogler-directed vampire thriller had collected four awards — best adapted screenplay for Coogler, best actor for Michael B. Jordan, best original score for Ludwig Goransson, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman to win an Oscar for best cinematography.
