Sterling K. Brown will star in and executive produce the Hulu limited series Washington Black about the journey from a sugar plantation to freedom in a distant land.
The series is scheduled to premiere on July 23, Hulu announced this week in a press release.
Based on Esi Edugyan’s bestselling novel by the same name, the eight-episode series follows the 19th-century adventures of George Washington “Wash” Black (Eddie Karanja), an 11-year-old boy born on a Barbados sugar plantation.
“When a harrowing incident forces Wash to flee, he is thrust into a globe-spanning adventure that challenges and reshapes his understanding of family, freedom and love,” according to the official description.
He settles in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is taken under the wing of town leader Medwin Harris (Sterling K. Brown).

“I’ve never seen the story being told through the lens of a young enslaved boy,” said Harrison. “I’m really excited for the world to go on this grand adventure with Washington Black.”
Washington Black is produced by 20th Television in association with Indian Meadows Productions and The Gotham Group.
Selwyn Hinds is co-showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Emmy winner Anthony Hemingway (American Crime Story and Underground). Esi Edugyan produces.
The series is set to premiere on Wednesday, July 23 on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
