New details have emerged about the shooting that killed reality TV personality Mackayla “Kash” Paige over the weekend in downtown Oakland, California.
Paige’s sister has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and other counts in connection with the shooting, local station KTVU Fox 2 reported Wednesday.
Authorities told the outlet Vernika Dunbar, 38, was allegedly trying to pistol-whip a woman who was fighting with her sister on Sunday, Oct. 11, but instead fired the shot that struck and killed the reality star.
Dunbar also faces charges of assault with a firearm and gun violations related to the confrontation. The shooting occurred near 14th and Harrison streets around 1:30 a.m.
Paige, 29, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died.
It’s unclear what led to the fight. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to Urban Hollywood 411‘s request for information on the case.
As previously reported, police arrested a woman from nearby Richmond shortly after the shooting. At the time, authorities had not publicly identified the suspect or released details on the circumstances surrounding the violence.
Videos posted to social media showed Paige enjoying a night out just hours before the shooting.
Known to viewers as Kash, she appeared on the independent streaming platform Now That’s TV on Young & Reckless, Roommhates and Now That’s Riot. She also appeared on The Real West Coast Baddies.
Now That’s TV paid tribute to the television personality in an Instagram post Sunday and offered condolences to her family, friends and fellow cast members.
“Through her appearances on YNR, Roommhates and Now That’s Riot, Kash became a part of our network’s story, and we will forever cherish the memories she leaves behind,” the network wrote. “Though her time with us was far too short, her memory will live on. Rest peacefully, Kash. Forever a part of the Now That’s TV family.”
