Jada Pinkett Smith shared an emotional message about mental health as she reflected on the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.
“One thing I’ve learned in my life over the years is that mental health is something we should practice daily, not just when issues arise,” Pinkett Smith wrote Monday on Instagram. “We should take care of our mind and spirit in the same way we do our body.”
The actress revealed the deaths of handbag designer Spade and celebrity chef Bourdain “brought up feelings of when I was in such despair and had considered the same demise…often.”
Pinkett Smith currently hosts Red Table Talk, a popular Facebook series, with daughter Willow Smith and her mom Adrienne Banfield-Jones.
The Girls Trip star has been open on the series about her tough childhood in Baltimore, as well as the challenges she has faced as a wife and mom.
In her Instagram post, the 46 year old said the deaths of Spade and Bourdain brought back memories of her own struggles, adding that it took a long time to heal.
“In the years I spent towards my healing, many moons ago, I realized the mind and heart can be extremely delicate without the foundation of a formidable spirit,” she said. “May Kate and Anthony Rest In Peace. Many may not understand… but I do, and this morning I have the deepest gratitude that I pulled through.”

A housekeeper found Spade’s body in the fashion designer’s New York City apartment on June 5. The chief medical examiner later ruled her death a suicide by hanging, according to The Associated Press.
Spade was 55. Her husband and business partner, Andy Spade, said she suffered from depression and anxiety for years, and was being treated by a doctor.
“There was no indication and no warning that she would do this,” he told The New York Times. “It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling.”
Bourdain, 61, was found dead in his hotel room in France three days later. Authorities told local journalists the Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown host hung himself. The famed chef was in Kaysersberg, France working on an episode of his popular cooking and travel series when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room.
“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain,” a spokesperson for CNN said in a statement. “His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller.”
The celebrity chef joined CNN in 2013, and his show was one of the most popular on the network. The fate of the series is unclear following Bourdain’s death.
