Nicki Minaj will be honored at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the network announced Monday.

The “Moment 4 Life” rapper, who is nominated this year in the Best Hip Hop category, will also perform at the ceremony in Newark’s Prudential Center on Aug. 28.

“Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount+, said in a statement. “She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki.’”

The show airs live from the Prudential Center in downtown Newark, New Jersey on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 8PM ET/PT.

Previous Vanguard Award recipients include Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott. David Bowie, The Beatles and director Richard Lester shared the honor at the first-ever VMAs in 1984.

Over the years, Nicki Minaj has been nominated 17 times and picked up 5 Moon Person trophies at the VMAs.

The rapper’s next single, “Super Freaky Girl,” will be released on Aug. 12.

She is also working on a new documentary series titled Nicki about her life and career. The six-part series is produced by global entertainment company Bron Studios. Minaj shared the trailer last month. A network home and release date for the project will be announced soon.
