‘Miami Vice’ Movie Starring Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler Gets Major Update

The upcoming Miami Vice movie from director Joseph Kosinski is moving forward, with Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan and Oscar nominee Austin Butler officially joining the cast.

In a report on Wednesday, April 22, The Hollywood Reporter said reps for the actors confirmed they had signed on for roles in the film. The title of the drama will be Miami Vice ’85.

Reports surfaced in October that the two actors were in talks for the film, now it’s official. Jordan will play Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Butler will portray Detective James “Sonny” Crockett.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, although its been revealed that the film “will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami.” The drama is inspired by the first season of NBC’s Miami Vice, which aired from 1984 to 1989.

Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy) is writing the script for the film, based on characters from the TV series. Universal Pictures is scheduled to release the drama on Aug. 6, 2027.

Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann, the television series ran for 111 episodes. Don Johnson starred as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs.

The cast also included Edward James Olmos, who won a supporting actor Emmy Award for his portrayal of Lieutenant Martin Castillo. Saundra Santiago played Detective Gina Calabrese, Olivia Brown portrayed Detective Trudy Joplin, and Michael Talbott played Detective Stan Switek.

The show followed undercover vice detectives in Miami as they investigated drug trafficking and other serious crimes in the 1980s.

The series was known for its pastel-colored fashions, fast cars, and using popular music, including Phil Collins’ hit single “In The Air Tonight.”

A previous movie adaptation starring  Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx premiered in 2006. It had middling success and earned $164 million at the worldwide box office against a reported $135 million production budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
