John Leguizamo to Receive Career Achievement Award at Critics Choice Celebration

John Leguizamo will be honored for his four decade career in Hollywood and on Broadway.

The Critics Choice Association announced Monday, Aug. 24, the Emmy-winning actor, comedian and playwright will receive a Career Achievement Award at the sixth annual Celebración of Cinema & Television.

Leguizamo got his start with small roles on TV shows like Miami Vice and the films Die Hard 2 and Hangin’ with the Homeboys.

His later film credits include Carlito’s Way; To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar; Romeo + Juliet; Spawn; Moulin Rouge!; Summer of Sam; and the Ice Age series.

He currently has a role in director Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The blockbuster film opened July 17 and has earned $1.4 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Critics Choice celebration will take place Oct. 2 in Beverly Hills. Several other Latino artists will also be recognized at the ceremony.

Scrubs star Judy Reyes will receive the Trailblazer Award, for her body of work across film, television, and theater.

The Office actor Oscar Nuñez will be presented with the Vanguard Award for his work in film and television, most recently in Peacock’s The Paper.

Actor and puppeteer James Ortiz will receive the Innovator Award for Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary.

Aimee Carrero will be presented with the Supporting Actress Award – series for Apple TV’s Your Friends & Neighbors.

Inde Navarrette will receive the Breakthrough Actress Award – film for her role in Focus Features’ Obsession.

Laysla De Oliveira will be honored with the Breakthrough Actress Award – series for her work in the Paramount+ spy series Lioness.

Rodrigo Teixeira will receive the Producer Award for work on Neon’s Paper Tiger.

Filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known collectively as Los Javis, will accept the Director Award for Netflix’s La Bola Negra.

Filmmaker Beth de Araújo will receive the Breakthrough Director Award for the Sumerian Pictures drama Josephine, starring Mason Reeves, Channing Tatum, and Gemma Chan.

“To honor this remarkable class of Latino and Hispanic artists is nothing short of a gift, especially during a time that has been difficult for our communities,” Critics Choice Association member and co-programmer Clayton Davis said in a statement. “Latino and Hispanic storytellers keep creating from a place of joy and defiance, turning our histories and culture into art that moves the culture forward.”

Davis will host the Celebración of Cinema & Television alongside Critics Choice Association member Amanda Salas. Javier Infante, Madelyn Hammond and Ella Carlson of Hammond Infante Productions will produce the event.
