Lil Nas X called out the BET Awards on social media after learning he was completely snubbed when the nominations were announced Wednesday morning.

This is the second year the awards show has ignored the “Montero” artist, and Lil Nas X believes it may have something to do with the fact that he’s openly gay.

The 23-year-old artist wrote in a since-deleted viral tweet, “Thank you BET Awards. An outstanding zero nominations again. Black excellence!”

When a social media follower questioned why he felt he deserved a nomination, Lil Nas X wrote back: “Idk maybe 3 of the biggest songs of last year & a critically acclaimed album. I feel like that should’ve helped me a bit.”

He also said in a follow-up tweet: “I just feel like Black gay people have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top, mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”

Lil Nas X’s debut album “Montero” featured multiple hits including “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow. The album was nominated for five Grammy awards this year.

He did pick up a BET Awards nomination for best new artist in 2020, following the success of his hit country music single “Old Town Road.” But he wasn’t nominated in 2021 or 2022.

Doja Cat, Drake and Ari Lennox currently lead the list of nominees for this year’s BET Awards. The ceremony will air live on Sunday, June 26 from Los Angeles on BET at 8 pm ET/ PT.
