Jussie Smollett is back with a new project.
The Empire star has directed a second film titled, The Lost Holliday, which is set to debut in select AMC theaters this fall.
The film is about a mother named Cassandra Marshall (Smollett’s former Empire co-star Vivica A. Fox), who comes to Los Angeles to plan her estranged son’s funeral.
Once she arrives, she finds out the funeral arrangements are being made by her son’s husband, Jason Holliday (Smollett) — a man she knew nothing about.
Along with that shock, Cassandra finds out her son and Jason have an adopted daughter, Arielle (Londyn Carter).

According to the official press release, The Lost Holliday explores themes of, “family dynamics, friendship, fatherhood, adoption, mother-son and father-daughter relationships, grief, and the bonds of love that transcend time, generational trauma, and even death.”
The cast also includes Jabari Redd, Marquise Vilsón, Brittany S. Hall, Miriam A. Hyman, Memphis Cade, Cynthia Bailey, Corey Knott, Alex “ADIV” Duncan IV, Betty Coleman, Bella Bahhs, Gina Belafonte, and Leslie D. Baker.
As well as directing and acting in The Lost Holliday, Smollett is co-writer and producer. Other producers include Mona Scott-Young (Love & Hip Hop), and Tressa Azarel Smallwood (Wicked City).
Smollett’s mother, Janet Smollett is part of the project as an executive producer.
Vivica A. Fox, Tom Wilson, Eddie Mac, Stephanie R. Gayle, James Earl Hardy, Jerrell Chesney, Shelia Legette, and Anthony Smallwood are also executive producers.
The film comes as Smollett looks to move beyond his legal troubles, after he was convicted of disorderly conduct, but denied staging an attack on the streets of Chicago in 2019.
Smollett’s sophomore directorial effort had its world premiere in June at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF).
The Lost Holliday will be released in select AMC locations on Sept. 27, 2024.
