A Los Angeles judge has dismissed a lawsuit Jay-Z filed last year, claiming attorney Tony Buzbee tried to extort him and defamed him in a complaint tied to a decades-old rape allegation after the hip-hop mogul refused to settle.

The judge handed down the ruling on Monday, June 30, TMZ reported.

Jay-Z’s attorney Alex Spiro reacted to the judge’s decision, saying: “We are surprised and disappointed by this ruling which turns on the misapplication of California law on the admissibility of the investigators’ statements.”

The mogul, born Shawn Carter, filed the lawsuit anonymously as a “John Doe” on Nov. 18, 2024.

The complaint alleged Buzbee was “attempting to extort exorbitant sums” after threatening a male celebrity with “fabricated and malicious allegations of sexual assault.”

A month later, Buzbee identified the mystery celeb as Jay-Z after the attorney filed an amended lawsuit on behalf of a “Jane Doe” accuser alleging Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs took turns raping Doe at an afterparty in 2000, when she was 13-years-old.

Both Diddy and Jay-Z vehemently denied the allegation.

Then on Feb. 14, 2025, the woman’s lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be reopened, after she admitted making “mistakes,” and inconsistencies were revealed during an interview she did with NBC News.

Buzbee, who was in the process of filing 120 sexual abuse lawsuits against Diddy at the time, faced a string of negative press.

However, the attorney declared victory on July 1, following the judge’s ruling.

“Yet another huge win!! John Doe’s case against me and The Buzbee Law Firm alleging extortion and defamation was thrown out by the court. As I said when it was filed, the case was completely meritless,” Buzbee said in a statement.

He added that Jay-Z aka “John Doe” owes him money.

“We will now seek attorneys’ fees against John Doe for bringing the legally flawed case,” the statement continued.
