Tiger Woods was taken into custody Friday afternoon on Jupiter Island, Florida, and charged with driving under the influence.
Police arrested the golf superstar at the scene of a crash after his SUV “clipped” the back of a truck hauling a pressure cleaning trailer, authorities said at a news conference streamed live by the Associated Press.
Responding investigators found a “Land Rover, which was rolled over on the driver’s door,” Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told reporters.
The crash occurred around 2 p.m. ET. Moments earlier, the driver of the truck noticed an SUV “overtaking him at high speeds” on a two-lane road, the sheriff said.
The Land Rover “swerved to avoid a collision, but clipped the back end of the trailer,” and flipped over. No one was injured.
Investigators said Woods “showed signs of impairment.” He agreed to a breathalyzer test, which came out negative. But the golfer “wanted no part of” a urine test, Budensiek said.
“They believed from on scene that he was not impaired by alcohol, they believed that it was some type of medication or drug,” Budensiek said.
The sheriff’s department released photos from the crash site, which showed the SUV lying on its side not far from the truck, which still had the trailer attached.

Authorities charged Woods with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, the sheriff said. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Woods told investigators he was recovering from injuries and a surgery, the sheriff said.
ESPN reported Woods recently suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and had back surgery in October.
In February 2021, the golf legend was hospitalized after a single-vehicle rollover crash in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Authorities said he was driving a Genesis GV80 SUV and had to be cut out of the mangled vehicle.
“We used a Halligan tool, which is a tool used for prying, and we also used an ax to pry him from the vehicle,” said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.
Woods suffered multiple leg and ankle injuries. The L.A.County sheriff said he was “lucky to be alive.” The sheriff’s department later determined he was speeding and failed to “negotiate the curve of the roadway.”
According to the AP, he was also arrested for DUI in 2017, after a Florida police officer found him asleep behind the wheel of his car. Woods said he had an “unexpected reaction” to prescribed medication. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
