Gayle King is staying on CBS Mornings.
The news anchor inked a new multi-year contract with the network and released a statement Wednesday, brushing off reports that claimed she would be sacked.
“Rumors of my demise were inaccurate and greatly exaggerated,” King said. “CBS News is my longtime home, and I am committed to our mission. I’m excited about continuing at CBS Mornings. As always, I’m open to new adventures here and ready to go. It took a minute, but we got there. And now that we are here, I am all in.”
CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss shared King’s statement on X shortly after the Wall Street Journal broke the news that King had renewed her contract with CBS parent company Paramount Skydance.
The veteran newscaster joined the CBS morning program, which was previously called CBS This Morning, in November 2011.
Reports began to surface last fall that the network’s new MAGA-friendly leadership wanted to move the show to the right and King was not part of their plan.
Among the outlets falsely predicting her “demise” were the New York Post, Variety, and RadarOnline.
On Aug. 5, 2025, the New York Post reported King’s future at CBS was “murky.”
“CBS faces a growing dilemma over the future of mega-buck anchor Gayle King as ratings for her ‘woke’ morning show collapse — and the struggling network’s new owners vow to root out left-wing bias,” a report in the outlet said.
On Aug. 27, RadarOnline published a story saying King’s career at CBS was “nearing its end” because her “woke sensibilities” had “driven viewers away.”
Then on Oct. 30, Variety claimed King was “expected to depart” CBS Mornings when her contract expires in May 2026. Sources said she would be offered a “different role” at CBS.
King is known for landing high profile exclusives, including a September interview with rapper Cardi B who revealed she was expecting a baby with her on-off boyfriend, NFL star Stefon Diggs, after leaving her husband.
In 2019, King sat down for an exclusive and now-viral interview with R. Kelly before he was convicted of racketeering and sexual exploitation of minors.
The R&B singer lost it in the explosive interview when pressed about the allegations against him. He began to cry, stood and shouted: “Y’all quit playing… I didn’t do this stuff. This is not me. I’m fighting for my f–king life.”
King calmly urged Kelly to sit back down during his outburst.
She also interviewed Kelly’s two live-in girlfriends. The conversation went off the rails after King asked the two young women about the nature of their relationship with the much-older singer.
One of the women returned later for another sit-down with King. She said R. Kelly had coached her ahead of the first interview. The woman said, “I was lost.”
