Miss Governor will not return for a second season on Netflix.
Series lead and executive producer Terri J. Vaughn announced the cancellation in a video statement she posted to Instagram on Monday, March 2.
The political comedy followed Mississippi’s first Black lieutenant governor, Antoinette Dunkerson (Vaughn), as she figured out how to thrive under a condescending governor while juggling politics and family life.
The series, which was initially called She The People, ran for 16 episodes. The first eight episodes debuted in May 2025, with the second half of the season premiering in August.
But on Feb. 24, the website What’s On Netflix reported the streaming giant had “no plans to renew Miss Governor for a full second season, effectively canceling the series.”
Vaughn said she’s “heartbroken” by the decision.
“Obviously, my show Miss Governor is not getting a second season,” she said. “I’ve actually known this for some time, but just kind of been sitting with it, letting myself just feel it and deal with it on my own.”
“I have to admit, I was quite heartbroken when I first got the info — mainly because I really worked my ass off to make that show come to fruition,” she continued
Vaughn executive produced the comedy alongside Niya Palmer and Tyler Perry. The actress said the show filmed in Atlanta and hired a lot of Georgia-based talent.
The cast also included Jade Novah, Drew Olivia Tillman, Tré Boyd, Dyon Brooks, and Jo Marie Payton.
“The most heartbreaking part of this show not coming back, is all the people involved — my whole cast, who was so talented,” Vaughn said.
She thanked the actors and the team who helped put together a “proof of concept” video to sell the idea to Netflix.
Vaughn said she co-created the comedy with Niya Palmer, and they were able to bring former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on as an executive producer.
Despite the cancellation, the actress thanked fans for watching.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time, and the fans and supporters have always been the wind under my wings, and it still hasn’t changed,” she said. “You guys still show up for me in a way that just makes me overwhelmed and emotional.”
Netflix picked the series up as part of Tyler Perry’s partnership with the streamer. In October 2023, the filmmaker signed a multi-film deal with the streamer, followed by a TV deal in February 2024.
Miss Governor was his second series under the TV deal. The first show, Beauty in Black, was renewed for a third season in December 2025.
According to Netflix’s Engagement Report for the second half of 2025, Miss Governor was viewed 2.1 million times, making it one of the lower-rated original series on the platform.
In comparison, Wednesday: Season 2 topped the chart with 123.9 million views. Stranger Things 5 came in second place with 93.5 million views.
