Megyn Kelly is facing backlash for her comments on the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, who was fatally shot on Saturday while protesting the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.
Some members of the Trump administration have claimed agents acted in self-defense because Pretti was “brandishing a gun.” However, The Guardian reports two different witnesses have given sworn testimony disputing those claims, with witnesses saying Pretti was holding a cell phone.
The nurse’s death has sparked anger across the nation, although Kelly insists the federal agents did nothing wrong.
On Monday’s episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show” podcast, the former Fox News host accused Pretti of being part of a group of “organized agitators.”
Kelly claimed Pretti and other protesters confronted federal agents for likes and shares on social media.
“They go out there looking for confrontations that they can make go viral on their social media or that they can use as propaganda to turn people against the good guys,” she said. “[Pretti] was there with a loaded gun looking to cause trouble for the Border Patrol agents, and that trouble came back on him.”
She then invoked George Floyd’s name.
“Resisting arrest can lead to very bad things, just ask George Floyd,” Kelly added. “Like, you don’t do it, bad things can come. You don’t resist arrest. You don’t antagonize cops in the middle of the street in a law enforcement operation and then when they’ve got hands on you trying to place you under arrest, you submit! That’s it. Submit!”
More than 2,000 people commented on the video after it was posted to YouTube. While MAGA supporters cheered Kelly on, others blasted the podcaster for her take on Pretti’s death.
“Without citizens filming there wouldn’t be evidence poking holes in your propaganda. Thank GOD for the brave people of MN documenting this unholy mess,” one viewer wrote.
“Megyn, this looks like an execution to me,” another shared.
“Losing respect for you, MK,” someone else wrote.
“Alex Pretti was murdered. Shot in the BACK. Murdered. Period,” another person wrote.
“Lady you just want to invite listeners with this disgusting rhetoric,” another viewer wrote.
On Tuesday, Jan. 27, a Customs and Border Protection official told Congress two different federal agents fired shots at Pretti, the Associated Press reported.
President Trump has ordered a shakeup in leadership in the ICE operation in Minnesota after Pretti’s death, which came less than three weeks after a federal agent killed protester Renee Good.
